The Importance of Being Earnest Second Act
The whole drama is an infallibly ridiculous story. It can make me laugh from the beginning to the ending. Although the story is full of verbose, inconsistent, inconsequential, and absurd dialogue on the surface, substantially Oscar relates the story to show the situation of the upper class with sarcastic and sharp tone. I think Oscar is a talent for satirizing the world. He holds every opportunity as tightly as possible to laugh at the society. However we hardly smell the uncomfortable, lethal, manic, and subversive atmosphere. We just can see a beautiful and glamorous flower but when we touch the flower and smell it closely, the smell of the flower is enough to stink us all out. However unbearable, astonishing, and acerbic his words are, Oscar always can have a special and professional style to make us senseless to his ridicule. From every angle of the drama, we can find his highly-skilled and concealing irony. Maybe we just immersed ourselves in his outward tragedy so as to have no feeling about his severe sarcasm.
Miss Prism is a conservative and serious tutor. Jack's niece is Miss Prism's pupil. She shows very firm unyielding narrow ideas about right and wrong behavior. She holds firm to her beliefs of "the good leads to happiness, and the bad leads to unhappiness." A short dialogue between she and Dr. Chasuble gives us a broad hint that she likes Dr. Chasuble privately. Because when Cecily says,"I see dear Dr. Chasuble coming up through the garden", Miss Prism rise and advances immediately and said,"Dr. Chasuble! This is indeed a pleasure." Moreover, Dr. Chasuble also was favorably disposed to Miss Prism because Dr. Chasuble said, "Were I fortunate enough to be Miss Prism's pupil, I would hang upon her lips." As to Cecily, she is a lazy student, and make a bargain and dispute about that she doesn't want to study any subject. Cecily is a clever, wily, treacherous and quick-witted little girl, and she do the most extreme measures to quibble about unimportant things with Miss Prism. In the same way, both Gwendolen and she love the persons with the same names "Earnest". But the two persons have the exactly different personality. Cecily is a childlike girl. She always says what she want to say. She loves Algernon's sweet words. Algernon says every sensible man would like to be caught in a love snare, especially in a snare of girls with good looks. And the love snare for Algernon is Cecily.
Miss Prism positively persuaded Chasuble to get married. Miss Prism considered herself mature and attractive enough to make Dr. Chasuble give up celibacy and soften his perseverance to marry her. Dr. Chasuble thinks about his duties are useful at any occasion. He is proud of himself. He likes to broad and advertise himself.
Algy disguised Jack's dead brother to go to Jack's home in the country. Jack can't stand Algy's mischief-making for no reason. Jack can have neither strength nor courage to get rid of the shameless fellow. There is no way to cure it. Jack can't resist and oppose Algy unreasonable quarrel; Jack is unskilled in speech and is ill at making excuses. And Algy is a immortal "cockroach". He can go anywhere and survive at any hard environment. He has a special manner to linger on. Nobody can't refuse his power and attraction. Gwendolen and Cecily are ignorant of even the simplest facts---judging a person can't rely on his name. On the contrast, they love the "name", not the alive men because the name "Earnest" gives them security of spirit.
