In the poem "The Farmer*s Bride," we are able to obtain an understanding about the emotions that existed in the low class in the Victorian age.  In that era, people in low class were busy working at all times.  Take farmers for instance.  When spring came, they were busy sowing seeds and taking of their corns.  After the corns were ripe and were ready to be harvested, farmers had to be working harder than before.  And this means that the more the helpers they have, the more relaxed they might be.  Owing to this, the marriage is usually one of the ways they could get helpers, and this is also the background of this poem.
     In the first stanza, we can find that the bride is probably far younger than the farmer, and that the reason why he wants to marry her is only because he needs a helper to give him a hand during the harvest time.  Besides, it can be observed that the farmer does not love his bride, for the evidence is in the first line-"*I chose a maid." So far as the farmer is concerned, his wife is just similar with a tool or a machine, so he uses the word "chose" which is like choosing a product without any feeling.  Although we can find the word "love" in the fifth line, actually the farmer means sex. In his point of view, love equals to sex, while he overlooks that love is not merely limited in this narrow meaning, and that it contains spiritual things.  In spite of this, we can not blame the farmer, for few people in low class in that period of time seldom had opportunities to get education.
     When we come to read the following two stanzas, it occurs to us that the bride is wild and sweet when people keep away from her.  As she is not old and mature enough to be someone*s wife and a family*s hostess, only when people are away from her can she ease her tension and show her real nature.  However, as the farmer is quite elder than her, he can not realize her thoughts, or we may say that the farmer is so busy that he hardly has time to care about his little wife.  As a result, the gap between the couple keeps deeper and larger.  They have difficulties in communicating with each other. Therefore, the farmer feels frustrated and then chooses to use an intense action-lock his wife in the attic.  Just like what I have mentioned before, the farmer regards his wife as a product which can be chosen, so he thinks that if he locks his wife in the attic, then he could keep her (like a good) forever.
     To sum up, I sympathize with people in this era, whether men or women-the former did not know what love is and how to love other people, and the latter had no freedom at all and were always under men*s control, and these are all pities.
