The Playing With Words
in "Romeo and Juliet"
Vicky Cheng
This is a courting poem.
Romeo compared his lips
to two pilgrims
in order to ask Juliet for
a kiss.
The two are playing with
words.
Romeo said that the touch
of hands was too rough
so he wanted to replace
it with lips,
but Juliet said that palm
to palm is already holy palmers’ kiss.
There was no need to use
lips.
The young people tend to
express their emotion directly and straightforwardly.
Romeo showed his desire
directly
and passionately and Juliet
was smart with words, too.
