Symbols
Act 2
                                                                                                                                                   By Andrey Chen

1. Seeds: We can often hear that Willy wants to plant some carrots, peas or so outside the house so he often wants to buy some seeds. This can be a symbol that he desires to have his own space to get some releases. Besides, people often use seeds to represent hope and a new start. Biff and Happy don't reach Willy's expectation, so he may leave his hopes in those seeds and plants them by his own hands hoping them will grow well and strong.

2. Wire-recording machine: During that time, this machine wasn’t common and cheap. Although people had already used machines like refrigerators and radios, they don’t trust machines that much. Willy mentioned that he liked to work by tools and hands, and he hardly turned on the radio in his car. When he accidentally turned the wire-recording machine on, he was leaping away with fright, shouting Howard to shut it off. We can see that Willy was a conservative man, he was afraid of new machines with so many different buttons and even voices in it. He couldn't trust machines which he can't take full charge of. It was sad that new machines had replaced many workers. Television commercials had also replaced salesmen. For this reason, he couldn't avoided being fired by Howard, but it seemed that he still couldn't realize the truth that he was out of time.

3. Dave Singleman: This man is Willy's model. At the age of eighty-four, pick up a phone, and be remembered and loved and helped by so many different people. When he died, hundreds of salesmen and buyers were at his funeral. But did he ever feel lonely on his journey like Willy do now? I believe the answer is yes. In the business world, salesmen always have to show their smiles to customers. They do money business instead of emotional business. "Singleman" gives a symbol that business world is realistic. Willy emphasizes good relationships with people too much so that he ends up feeling deserted and lonely.

4. Whistles: Willy and Happy think Biff is stupid and not responsible to whistle in the elevator instead of pleasing others with good behaviors. In that society, most people would think it is better for workers to give a good impression to their superiors so that they can get promotions easier. Besides, Howard lets his son to recite those capitals of states, but he only teaches his daughter to whistle. This "whistle" is a symbol that girls don't have to learn much knowledge

5. Fountain pen: Fountain pen is a symbol of Biff's content. Willy's education teaches him that he is better than other people and well-liked. When he was young, he took other things for granted ( took the football for instance) because he thought others like him and no one would blame him. This kind of self-confidence has existed for a long time. After ten more years, he still believes Oliver still likes him and will give him a hand. When he meets Oliver and knows the truth, he is really upset and the self-confidence suddenly disappears. Taking the fountain pen is a kind of revenge. He also comforts himself by taking a possession from Oliver.
