A Short Film Festival (C) NFB | Visual improvisation on music performed by a popular group presented as sidewalk entertainers. The illustration is by a young film artist and animator who sees life with an amused and imaginative eye. His take-off point is the music, but his own beat is more boisterous than the musicians. He ranges from the most convoluted of abstractions to caricature of familiar rituals, including the bath. (Five awards, including Oberhausen; Melbourne.) |

Abstract
Within the crystal chambers of a glittering palace, a magnificent bird performs for its Emperor--its plumage a blaze of color. A blackbird, watching enviously, strives to acquire what he so desperately covets, only to discover that a golden cage cannot vie with the open skies. Innovative mixed-media techniques--cutouts, color pencil renderings on cels and paper, multiple exposures, and backlit perforated backgrounds--combine with human imagination to produce this visually stunning animation short. (Awards: Berlin; Annecy; Gijon; Spain; Melbourne; Antibes-Juan-les-Pins; Los Angeles; Adelaide; Hamilton; Oakland; New York; Oscar nomination, Hollywood.) Film without words. |
