An Example of the Interaction![]() ![]() ![]() Note: This is an example made by the teachers at Texas A & M. In your own correspondence, you can expect your writings to be corrected this way, or some other kind of teaching-learning activity to go on. Be serious about it, but don't let that stop you from expressing yourself or making friends. |

Hello, Lauren,
My name is Doris Shih, a student studying English Language and Literature in Fu-Jen Catholic University in Taiwan. My teacher told me that you will be my pen-pal and tutor for this semester. I am very happy to meet you through e-mail. Let me introduce myself briefly here. My Chinese name is Yu-Chih. I was born in the south of Taiwan in a city called Kaohsiung. It's a beautiful city but always hot (maybe not as hot as Texas). Right now I live in Taipei because of my study. I am getting used to the wet whether here in the north of Taiwan. My hobbies are reading, playing the piano, and occasionally watching some movies with friends. I would like to visit the United States one day. I am also learning French, so I hope to see France too. Well, I hope to here from you soon!! Sincerely, Doris :) |
Dear Doris,
I am very happy to have the opportunity to teach you about English language and United States culture. My name is Lauren Cifuentes. I teach in the Educational Technology program at Texas A&M University. My husband also teaches here, but in the oceanography department. We have 3 children. Yada Yada Yada Yada. 1)Please send me a paragraph describing the most unforgettable experience that you have had in the past 6 months. Please do not have anyone edit your work, as I will diagnose your writing and then give you suggestions. 2) Ask me a question about my culture and I will provide you with an answer. I look forward to hearing from you by Oct. 2. Thank you, Lauren Cifuentes |
Dear Lauren,
I am so happy to receive your e-mail, thank you so much!! My most unforgettable experience happened six months after I arrive in Taipei from Kaohsiung. I was buying a car as soon as I could because the apartment I living in was many miles from my college. I had not drive for many years, this is my first time driving. During this past year, I drove to college at 8:00, then to a part time job at 3:00, and then home at 10:00 every day. About 3:00 one afternoon I drove on the main road when it suddenly began to rain, and the roads became very slippery. I never saw the driver of the other car lose control until the car was directly in front of me....Now, I always wear my seatbelt and make everyone in the car to buckle up before I start my car. This is my frightening experience. My question about your culture is: what do you typically eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the United States? Do you know about Chinese food? I will tell you about what I like the most next time (as I need to look up the English words for the dishes.) Bye for now and see you online soon!! Doris:)

Dear Doris,
I have placed asterisks immediately after the errors in your writing. In this paragraph you had problems with 1)verb tense, 2)use of articles, and 3)a run on sentence. My most unforgettable experience happened six months after I arrive ** in Taipei from Kaohsiung. I was buying a car as soon as I could because the apartment I living ** in was many miles from my college. I had not drive ** for many years, ** this is ** my first time driving in Taipei. During this past year, I drove ** to college at 8:00, then to a part time job at 3:00, and then home at 10:00 every day. About 3:00 one afternoon I drove on the main road when it suddenly began to rain, and the roads became very slippery. I never saw the driver of the other car lose control until the car was directly in front of me....Now, I always wear my seatbelt and make everyone in the car to buckle up ** before I start my car. This is ** my frightening experience. Please correct the errors and send me the corrected copy of your work. As for my meals-- I typically have fruit and cereal or toast for breakfast. For lunch and dinner I eat a wide variety of foods. For lunch I might have soup and a sandwich. Dinner usually includes a salad, a serving of meat, and one or two side vegetables. I eat a lot of foods from other countries. Almost every town in the U.S. has at least one Chinese restaurant and Chinese food is very popular here. I like almost all of the Chinese dishes. I look forward to hearing from you, Doris. Yours, Lauren |
