In this poem, the poet recalled a love affair between he and his girlfriend, and itˇ¦s a bad memory. According to the content we can know how the poet was hurt in the relationship. For example, the mention of ˇ§chidden of Godˇ¨, ˇ§The smile on your mouth was the deadest thingˇ¨, ˇ§Alive enough to have strength to dieˇ¨, ˇ§ominousˇ¨, ˇ§keen lessons that love deceivesˇ¨, and ˇ§God-curstˇ¨.
The title has two meanings, one is intonation and the other is hue. When it means hue, we can find it true that there are lots of words like ˇ§grayˇ¨ appearing in the poem, and ˇ§neutralˇ¨ also refers to a little gray. It means that their love has no color and gone away. When it means intonation, it shows that the speaker says this calmly.
At the beginning of the poem, we start to find a series of images of natural things such as a pond, the sun, leaves, the sod, and an ash. These images are presented to show how the speaker feels when he recalls the heart-broken past.
In addition to the conflicts between the speaker and his girlfriend, they also have a problem of communication. According to the second stanza we can know that they didnˇ¦t talk much at the end of their relationship and leave lots of ˇ§riddlesˇ¨. Besides, the more they talk, the more they lost their love.
The last two lines of this poem are condensing of imagery in order to show how a memory hurts oneˇ¦s heart.
