Yes, I agree with Irene that Jenny's description of the ideologies which justify slavery is quite impressive. It's hard for us now to imagine how the whites could have such a sense of superiority, but they did, and some still do.

Although I don't quite remember the text, I feel-- from Jenny's description -- that the text is critical of these ideologies. However, I am curious how Fredric Douglas responded to them and whether--or to what degree--he got influenced by them. One possible consequence is a kind of self-hatred, to believe that one must be educated as a white man, to to wear a white mask despite one's own black skin.
