I had a chat with Norman and Willa the following day after we had that responsive discussion in class last Monday. Part of my intention was to try to figure out why the discussion turned out to be sort of an argument of whether is Japan colonizing Taiwan with the aid of certain commodities, such as Hello Kitty.
I think I have the answer now. From the two classmates, I found out that there are some misunderstanding regarding the role and position of Japanese economic and cultural colonization. It seems like some classmates might think that it is not appropriate to say that we are colonized by Japanese "Hello Kitty." That is right because we are not colonized by certain commodities. Instead, we are colonized by the culture represented by these commodities. For example, the idealistic lifestyle represented by Japanese Soap Opera, etc.
Hopefully I am right in explaning this and at the same time this helps in certain aspect.
