"Aunt Junner's Tigers"
From the begining,we can see the description of Aunt Jennifer's tigers are so vivid.
"Aunt Jennifer's tigers prance across a screen
Bright topaz denizens of a world of green.
They do not fear the men beneath the tree
They pace in sleekchivalric certainty."
The tigers do not fear people. They just prance in sleek certainty, and show their strong manner.Tigers, are beautiful animals, their majestic apperance are shown out under Aunt Jennifer's ivory needle. What a lively work it is!!
But in the second part of the poem,we can see something differently.
"Aunt Jennifer's fingers fluttering through her wool
Find even the ivory needle hard to pull."
We can see Aunt Jennifer works very very hard.Maybe she is an old woman, and she is interested in and insists on art.So
even the ivory needle hard to pull, and her body is so week ,she still wants to finish her work of art.
"The massive weight of Uncle's wedding band
Sits heavily upon Aunt Jennifer's hand."
Ithink the description is strange. When Aunt Jennifer is working so hard, why Uncle's wedding band sits heavily upon her hand ? Does he want to stop Aunt Jennifer's work of art?
It seems that Uncle is really a heavy pressure, and now he pressures into her.To say deeply Uncle wants Aunt Jennifer to obey him.In the family,Uncle is the leader, and the relationship between them is not fair.
We can see more clearly in the third part of the poem.
"When Aunt is dead , her terrified hands will lie
Still ringed with ordeals she was mastered by"
Yes.She is really pressured.Even she has been dead, she is still ringed with ordeals she was mastered by.Ithink the sentence,"She was mastered by",means her husband.Aunt Jennifer is really a poor woman.
"The tigers in the pauel that she made
Will go on prancing , pround and unafraid."
Aunt Jennifer still insists on her work of art.Maybe in realistic world, she cannot speak loudly and do things she wants to do,but she still shows herself by creating these tigers.Although she has been dead ,and ringed with ordeals she was mastered by,and maybe she sometimes is forced to stop her work, the reasult is still good for her.See!Aunt Jennifer's tigers will go on prancing , pround and unafraid.Aunt Jennifer's work of art shows,in the prancing tigers,an energy that she apparently felt and understood ,but because of her husband and perhaps becauseof the period in which she lived, she could express herself only in a "ladylike"activity such as embroidering. But she has nevertheless "made"something depicting creatures who are "proud and unafraid",and in her art she created and image of energy. The poem makes me think of the story we have read
"The Yellow Wallpaper".The narrator was also a woman who could not express herself well. She dares not show herself out because of her husband. So she just wrote down what she thought secretly and tried to image herself to be the other
woman behind the yellow wallpaper.Like Aunt Jennifer, moves herself into the spirits which these tigers show out.In the realistic world ,they both show them on other phenomenous and other levels to continue the activities in their innermost beings. Therefore I think they are so similar!!:-)
