Sexual Image in Dali's Paintings
and His Wife, Gala

Conclusion

As Dali's faithful endorser, I found the most charming thing of Dali's paintings is the autobiographical element inside. His works are like diaries, which record his emotions, feelings and life chronologically. Gala is the star of Dali's life; she did not only brighten his life but also guide his mind. Beneath every piece of sexual organs and every line of the twisted female bodies, Gala's image shines behinds the canvas. From their first encounter to death, Gala's clear image has planted into many of Dali's work. Gala is Dali's only woman; she stires his deepest desire for love but also his fear. The subconscious fear of intercourse with Gala makes Dali automatically shows it on his canvas; his unpractical affection toward Gala causes anxiety, which shows itself in those twisted woman bodies. The disorder varieties of sexual forms in "The Lugubrious Game" tell the psychological state of Dali while encountering with Gala. Dali's unstable temper and hysteric which arouses by aphrodisiac and desire for Gala all present in the broken sexual images of "The Lugubrious Game". Dali's first and probably the only intercourse with Gala gives this paranoiac who claims himself impotent life long memory and impact. Dali shows his increasing fear of intercourse and anxiety toward the opposite gender in "The Great Masturbator". The deeper relationship with Gala makes Dali aware of his impotence. Therefor, he tries to cover his anxiety by praising masturation. In Dali's later works, Gala does not stay as symbol anymore. Dali painted her to represent goddess and showed his affection at the same time. Gala is not only Dali's wife but also the major source of his desire; his inspiration and most important of all¡Xhis lover.
