The poem first displays the circomstances the dame is in--in darkness and waiting. Although she dwells in the realm of God, unlike Lilith banished from the Scriptures, she can not get out of the space. Time here implies the "eternity," the eternity in which she is contstantly trapped. The "still look" which comprises a part of her static state, seems to freeze all the moments including the moments to read the poem. In the parantheses, the I-speaker comments the time dedicated to the passive waiting. In contrast with poe's "Raven," the subject here seems to be placed high above, but she does not possess any control over her state, either physical or spirtual. The effect of vertigo is successfully created in the sixth stanza. In this poem and painting, we can see an effort made to express spiritual beauty and religious love or submission of "a blessed damozel." Whether she is blessed or not is hard to say. I wonder who the "you" should designate. Is it the secular lover who is still alive? Or is she looking
forward to a spiritual unison the Holy Son, Jesus? In line 97-102, however, the true feelings of the damozel is heard through her song, her only way of expression; does it really matter whether it is a spiritual unity or simply a romantic or sexual attraction that stimulates such devotion? Later, she affrims to herself that she will be heard in front of Virgin Mary, that she would finally be allowed to voice for herself and her love for her beloved. What seems ironic to me after all these self-consolations is the fact that she still has to wait until the other one comes. This point is echoed by her tears shed at the end. The "path" mentioned in the middle part of the poem, is the symbolic female individuality striving to exteriolize itself and express itself. This end of the poem is pessimistic, though. The path is vague and the face of the damozel stays covered, where her identity is thwarted from exposure and her voice hushed.
