Indeed, it's hard to say why the damozel is "blessed." I quite agree with you that these women are all men's creation and possession. Some would want to argue that these male poets are "feminine poets" in sympathizing with women. However we also have to consider the "male" subject position they take in writing the poems. Without psychologizing the poets, we can still ask why the need to use women as inspiration (Muse) and then speak for them can become a dominant discourse. Kate |
