"Making a Monster yourself project"
--compare pp. 54-55 of Frenkenstein to the following passage and assignment given by two American teachers, F. William Ruegg and Ronald S. Broglio, from University of Florida.
What do you think is the purpose behind this project?  What "meanings" can you make of the re-creation of Frankenstein's monster out of web materials?

  • One secret which I alone possessed was the hope to which I had dedicated myself; and the moon gazed on my midnight labours, while,  with unrelaxed and breathless eagerness, I pursued images of myself in their hiding-places. Who shall conceive the horrors of my secret toil, as I dabbled among the unhallowed damps of the Web, or torvured the living               screen to animate the lifeless clay? My limbs now tremble and my eyes swim with the remembrance; but then a resistless, and almost frantic, impulse urged me forward; I seemed to have lost all soul or sensation but for this one pursuit. It was indeed but a passing trance that only made me feel with renewed acuteness so soon as, the unnatural stimulus cecsing to operate, I had returned to my old habits. I collected the bones of images from charnel house Web sites; and disturbed, with a profane finger on the mouse, the tremendous secrets of the human frame. In a solitary chamber, or rather cell, in Rolfs hall, and separated from all the other apartments by a gallery and staircase, I kept my workshop of filthy creation: my gye-balls were starting from their sockets in attending to the details of my employment. The dissecting room and the slaughterhouse furnished many of my materials and I worked with them cutting and pasting in WordPerfect. Often did my human nature turn with loathing
from my occupation, whilst, still urged on by an eagerness to complete the assignment which perpetually increased, I brought my work near to a conclusion.

    How to Make a Monster

As a first web assignment we want you to create a provisional web identity by putting together three images and a two paragraph description of your new persona on your homepage. Like Frankenstein, you will be creating an alter ego (a monster, if you wil l) from the fragments of other web page bodies (insert evil laugh here). You will describe this persona
as if {ou were talking to your own personal Walton or as if your Angel turned Demon were sitting next to you.

The identity that you will create will not be "you" in a complete sense,  but rather "a virtual self." In other words, feel free to use to use your imagination. Like Frankenstein's monster, your identity is composed of parts or fragments from different s ources (your parents, {our education, your friends, the music you like, etc+. You may emphasize any of these aspects of your self and create an alter ego that represents a visionary  self (i.e., who do you want to be? what parts of your self do you despise? what is your ideal?). You should include any quotations from the material we have read thus far that seem vo resonate in some way with your new persona. You may name this persona whatever you see fit.
