Dash

1.To show or speaking hiatus suddenly, you can use dash to point out the pause of thinking.

Example:

a. He said,“I am not sure-. ”(×)

He said,“I am not sure-”(○)

b. She is-how shall I say?-an innocent devil. (○)

※Notice: We cant put period after dash.

  1. Dash is used to emphasize or replenish illustration.

Example:

  1. Her roommates-Jane, Laura, and Phoebe-are really lovely.
  2. Among the three most used-and abused-words in Washington are of the record.”
3.   We can use Dash to express the thinking hiatus which is longer than comma.(The sentence is usually inconsistency or theatricality.)

Example:

  1. Life is hopeless-but it isnt; love is fleeting-but eternal; our personal lives are everything-but we are unimportant.
  2. He was lying motionlessly-dead.
4.   After a series of antecedent, we connect the paragraph of conclusion.(These antecedents are subject, so we should use dash to centralize them.)

    Example:

    Manet, Cezanue, and Monet-these were the painters he admired most

5.   If the sentence were not clear enough in a part, we could use dash to express the section, which doesnt be written down.

    Example:

    She worked dili──to succeed.

    ※Dont use the blank space between dili(diligent) and dash is double longer than usually.

    ※But if the whole word is deficiency, the dash is triple longer than usual and it needs the blank space front and back.

    Example: Wall ─── is also sensitive to the winds of politics.

    (Origin sentence: Wall street is also sentence to the winds of politics)

    ※Some words which taboo on using can use dash to substitute.

    Example:

    Damned” can be written down in “dd.”

6.   We can use dash to express“to” “until”or “through”between figures.

    Example:

    Visiting hours are 8:30 AM-4:00PM.

7.   Using dash to show the writer or source in a quotation.

Example:

When love is satisfied, all its charm is gone-Corneille.

8.    When typing, using two ligature serially to replace and don t have blank space between the front and back words.

Example:

Harvey decided to go to ─ but you wouldnt be interested in that story. (×)

Harvey decided to go to─but you wouldnt be interested in that story. (○)
