Caryl Churchill

Caryl Churchill was born on September 3, 1938 in London, England. In many ways, she is a conventional middle-class citizen. Her father was a political cartoonist and her mother was a model. 

Her unusual use of theatrical structure always aims to reveal the value of the eccentric individual over the concentricities of an explosive social order. Caryl Churchill lives in London, now.

In 1958, Downstairs Her first play, was written while she was still at Oxford, was first staged and won an award at the Sunday Times National Union of Students Drama Festival.

In 1961, She married David Harter and raised three sons. At the same time, she tried to keep alive her dream of being a writer. Most of her early work was written for radio, and many of the plays were short.

In 1972, Owners Churchill received her first professional stage production when Owners was performed at the Royal Court Theatre.

In 1975, Objections to Sex and Violence Not immensely successful, but it introduced themes of feminism into her work.

In 1979, Cloud Nine The first play to receive wide notice. The effect is both  comic and instructive, since one of her most important purposes is to cast some light on gender distinctions.

In 1987, Serious Money A verse play about the London stock market. The play is a satiric study of those for whom only greed and getting ahead matter. Its success indicates that Caryl Churchill has been recognized as a major writer.
