An unnamed interrogator forces Crow to confess the mastery of Death. Hughes also rises to confront his terrifying knowledge. Death is powerful. Death owns ‘the whole rainy, stony earth (L13)’ and ‘all of space (L14)’ and is stronger than hope and love (L15, 17). Bur Crow is “stronger than death” (L 19).

Crow: an amalgam of god, bird, and man; the most famous of Hughes’s subjects.
