*     Juang, Althea (D).  “ Nirvana And The 90’s American Youth Culture”  Nirvana is a rock band. In the 90’s, it dominated the history of rock music. Moreover, Nirvana was recognized as “ the spirit of youth culture of the 90’s” by sociologists. In this research paper, I will show you that Nirvana represents the spirit of the American adolescent culture in the 90’s because it sings faithfully of youngsters’ powerlessness, rebellion and loss toward that pompous era and their lives, which touches young people’s capricious heart.

*     Liao, Lillian (D).  “The influence of punk culture to the people and society in Britain.”  Although the climax of punk culture contains only four years and seen as a rebellion and chaos to the society among youth subculture, its emphasis on attitude of self-rule and do-it-yourself make people to identify more of themselves.

*     Chan, Faye (E).  "Bebop --The Rebellious Power."  This paper discuss how Bebop style had became a rebellious power in its musical style, as well as its responses to contemporary racial, political, economic problems. I would point out those direct influences on the rising of Bebop, and further prove that it’s a revolution and had make many changes between the past and gave a huge impact toward the future jazz.

*     Wu, James.  "Don't Believe The Whites?"  Some people thought that Hip Hop is only formed by and for African  Americans, and that people of

          any other colors can’t make it in this arena. However, the truth is Hip Hop itself can never exclude the white people’s contributions no matter in terms of its backstage, the developments of its four major elements, or its promotion and its renovation.

*     Chen, Echo (A)   “Merely Fairy Tales?”  The Irish Writer Oscar Wilde is famous for his dramatic works but many readers do no know that The Nightingale and the Rose, The Selfish Giant and The Happy Prince Wilde completed after the birth of his son. However, Wilde’s fairy tales are not suitable for children to read because with the bloody and violent plots, they discuss social problems and explore the dark side of human nature.

*     Chang, Jessie. (A)  “Word Adventures VS. Visualization—Comparison between the Novel and the Film The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring    The Lord of the Rings trilogy enchants a lot of people by its legendary and epic scenes with spectacular wars and exciting adventures no matter in J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel or Peter Jackson’s film. However, Jackson made some marvelous changes that are different from the original novel and interestingly, these changes Jackson made result in the film’s greater success than the novel itself. By comparing the plot, characterization and focus in both, this paper will analyze how those changes are perfect arrangements and meanwhile, directly lead to the success of the film.

*        Liang, Annie.  “The Charm of Coffee.”  Due to the prevalent trend which coffee chain stores bring about; and with different combinations of physical, psychological, cultural and social reasons, more and more college students nowadays see drinking coffee as one frequent life choice and pleasure. Besides, the other issue about whether coffee is healthy or not is discussed after analyses of reasons about the popularity of coffee.

*       Pan, Christina (D).  “The Denim Jean Fad among College Students in Taiwan.”   Denim jean is favored by college students in Taiwan nowadays. However, the trend for denim is more than the pursue for fashion. Jeans act to represent young people’s ideologies in showing a sense of rebellion and freedom, uniqueness, and simplicity. In my paper, I introduced the evolution process of jeans, and the qualities in jean that attract

college student’s preference. Finally, I presented the symbolic features conveyed by college students who wear jeans.

*     Chen, Christine (A).  “The Vagueness of President Chen’s Inauguration Speech.”  In order to retain local supports while avoiding military clash across the Taiwan Strait, Chen has made important but ambiguous speeches before and after the presidential election.  Hence, Chen’s famous inauguration speech was not a rapprochement to improve Taiwan’s relation with China, and it’s delivered to satisfy Chen’s die-hard supporters.

*     Hsieh Jacob (A)  “Words Speak Louder Than Action: Rhetoric analysis of the Cuban Missile Crisis”  Cuban Missile Crisis had been discussed for thousands of times in 40 years, but here this paper adopts Kenneth Burke’s Dramatic/Pentadic Analysis to analyze how President John F. Kennedy gave a speech toward the American people, the Soviet Union and other different audience without causing nationwide panic and successfully ward off worsening this crisis into the World War Third. In addition to the Dramatic/Pentadic Analysis, the modern public speaking techniques would also be used in this analysis to prove that Kennedy’s speech was not only a great example of crisis management, but also definitely a rhetorically great public speaking!

 

*     Hsiao, Stephany.   Section C.  “Illustration in Children’s Literature”  This paper argues that illustration in children’s literature is sometimes more important than words.   First, this paper defines illustration and presents general beliefs about it. Second, it highlights the functions of  illustration  picture books such as  narrating stories or truth, inspiring children’s imagination and aesthetic, and communicating  the world to prove that illustrations play a key role in children’s books.

*      Shih, Sharon.  (B) “Tomato Juice In Taiwan”  A lot of Taiwanese believe that drinking tomato juice is a convenient way to make them healthy. Tomato juice has been considered as a great healthy drinking. However, after being processed the tomato juice is not natural anymore. Therefore, drinking tomato juice is not really helpful to human’s health. In this paper I want to discuss whether it is good or not to drink juice instead of eating tomato. People will know what they have to notice when buying tomato juice through this paper.
