American Literature, unlike the literature in England, is full of freedom, and the multicultural essence. In this website, you will see some of the well-known works of Americans before the Civil War, with Puritanism essence in the beginning, including Edward Taylor and Jonathan Edwards, two writers with very strong religious character in their works.  Later, there were also the early republicans, like Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, introducing the country of  America to all of us. The real American Literature did not start until Washington Irving arrived, as the country moves forward to the Transcendentalism era, with new authors like Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson and even Nathaniel Hawthorne. This is in fact the era of the so called "real American literature,"  with the real sensation and fascination of the literature of American Literature, with love, horror, Puritanism as well as other types of lyrics and essays. Want to read the works? Please check out the page numbers in our textbook, and read the works listed in our syllabus, and then come and explore the world of American Literature with us, and discuss on our discussion board if you have some opinions on the works of these sensational writers.
