Course Objectives:

Welcome back!!!  To continue our approach to literature, this semester we will start with, as a warm-up, two poems and two stories, and then venture into the longer texts (Pride and Prejudice, The Death of a Salesman) and classical English poetry of some interesting genres (dramatic monologue, metaphysical poetry, sonnet and ballad).  The objectives of this course remain mostly the same (with only one added): it is designed for you to

l          appreciate how literary texts convey their meanings to us through both form and content

l          understand different literary genres, their conventions and components,

l          analyze different parts of a text and how they are connected to its overall meaning; and, most importantly,

l           (new) learn to put literary works in their historical and social contexts.

l          relate the knowledge and experience we have in reading English literature to our understanding of ourselves and our society.
