“The Relationship between Instructors’ Characteristics and Pedagogical Style and Students’ Motivation of Learning English”

This research attempts to determine whether instructors’ characteristics and pedagogical style influence college students’ English learning motivation. The results of this research come from the perspectives of students who have taken Freshmen English and who are non-English majors at Fu Jen Catholic University (FJCU). This is a quantitative-based study; fifty one questionnaires are administered. This study compares both motivated and less motivated learners’ preferences for their instructors’ characteristics and pedagogical style. The results reveal both kinds of learners share a similarity in the perception of instructors’ characteristics, while difference in that of instructors’ pedagogical style. This research is worth being conducted due to the risk of the gradual decline in English learning motivation by the majority of college students. With the outcome of this research, it can provide suggestions for instructors who teach Freshmen English to non-English majors at FJCU how to effectively teach English at the college level.

“Hayao Miyazaki’s Reality in Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

This study aims to discuss Hayao Miyazaki’s representation of reality in Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Miyazaki’s preference in topic is highly related to the Japanese societal background after the Second World War which Miyazaki reflects in the corrupting human condition in Nausicaa. The human race faces an unstable society built upon a polluted and devastated environment. Looking into Miyazaki’s biography: Starting Point and film documentations, this study examines the relationship between man and nature as well as man and man shown in Nausica. How can we connect Miyazaki’s representation with the Japanese reality? How is Nature and civilization pictured differently from that of the West? This study may help to understand what Miyazaki wants to convey through his films.

“The Fast Fashion Fever in Taiwan”

The grand opening of the Spanish brand, Zara, has caused a great fever here in Taiwan. As one of the world-known fast fashion brands, Zara successfully has a share of Taiwanese ready-to-wear industry. Though Zara is so popular among Taiwanese fashion consumers, people from western worlds seem to have a different attitude toward the brand. A research indicates that people raised in Asian world tend to shop with different habits compared to people raised in Western world. Fast fashion productions such as Zara tend to have three major traits. Firstly, the customers love the design. Secondly, the products will be updated at least every two-week. Thirdly, the price is also reasonable. Asians also have different opinions from the Western people regarding on the three features. These are also the main reasons why Taiwanese fashion consumers are crazy about the brand, Zara comparing to Western people.

“Representation in Intercultural Theatre in Taiwan: An Example from
Contemporary Legend Theater’s Adaption of Waiting for Godot

Many people resist local theater to represent the foreign classic plays, such as Shakespeare, because they assume that by representing foreign plays, the spirit of the initial texts will be twisted. However, my research is to argue that adapting western works could combine the foreign influences with local traditional aspects to represent a new aspect of performing art. In the research, I will take example from the adapted script from Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” staged by Taiwanese Contemporary Legend Theatre. Based on my observation, adaption of western works in Taiwan enables the audience to have new perspective of classic works by experiencing the fusion of western culture with traditional spirit. The present research can contribute to Taiwan Theatre Development.
