“The Way for Bookstores to Survive: Building a Third Place” 

       More and more bookstores around the world are under great financial pressure and have closed because of the threat of online bookstores. Nevertheless, Eslite Bookstore, the largest and the most popular chain bookstore in Taiwan is making more and more profits these years. This research examines consumers’ motivation for purchases in Eslite Bookstore. With preliminary survey, this research reveals Eslite’s special operating strategy of creating a ‘third place’ for consumers and how effective it is. My findings provide some possible strategies for bookstores to improve and survive.

 "TV Advertisings are still Attractive"

TV advertisings are attractive to most of the female college students through the beautiful spokeswomen, catchy lines and flowery slogans. It has been generally believed that the TV commercials can lure them to purchase the products. However, with various ways of receiving beauty products’ information nowadays, can TV advertisings still attract consumers? According to Katherine Ryder’s “TV Advertising Is Long from Dead”, she points out that TV advertisings are still attractive based on Nielson’s research. This paper aims to answer these questions: 1. Do the TV advertisements attract to the female college students? 2. What are the main factors luring female college students to buy?

"Is Beauty The Truth: Taiwanese College Students’ Opinions towards Beauty and Cosmetic Surgery"

According to the old saying “beauty is truth, truth is beauty,” the definition of beauty was closer to the spontaneousness and the things without being modified in any way. However, as the time changes, the rise of the media industry, and the improvement on different kinds of cosmetic surgeries have affected people’s opinion of what beauty is and how to make themselves more beautiful. This essay aim to find out more about how Taiwanese college students define being “beautiful,” and how they think about making one’s appearance prettier by having cosmetic surgeries. The first-hand information was collected by using the online questionnaire with multiple choices, open questions, and scales. Also, to be more convincing, dissertations and scholarly journals are consulted as well.

“Smart Phones- An Aid or A Devastator of Communication?”

The population of smart phone users is growing rapidly each day. Interestingly, with the multiple functions such as APPs embedded within the smart phones, the high-tech device has been blamed for and claimed to take the responsibility for breaking attachments between human and therefore slowly destructing communication between people. Nevertheless, there are still situations that require indirect communication that only smart phones can fulfill. This research will firstly provide brief introduction to the public’s belief in how smart phones destroy human connections in modern society, and then will indicate some situations which indirect communication can be necessary and effective in solving problems according to communication skills. Lastly, the research will prove that the functions of communication apps of smart phones are not devastators of communication, but rather a method useful in ways of negotiation and fixing relationship problems.
