"A Preliminary Study of the Implementation of Critical Literacy in an EFL Context and Students’ Reaction: A Case Study of English Majors at FJU."

Critical Literacy, an instructional approach encourages readers to adopt critical perspectives towards texts, has been practiced in teaching English in many English-speaking countries, while in Taiwan, English teaching still focuses on teaching the four skills. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the feasibility of implementing Critical Literacy in Taiwan and college students’ reactions. Participants in this study included 10 freshman students studying in English Department of Fu-Jen Catholic University (FJU). They were divided into two groups, one of which received a 15-minute introduction to the concept of Critical Literacy by the researcher before answering the short essay questions; the other was not. Data includes their written responses, a questionnaire, and interviews.  The findings show that students were able to demonstrate a critical stance after a short introduction to the notions of Critical Literacy; they also held a positive view on the efficacy of the this implementation on their learning.

"
Eye of the Writer and SARS."

A Hong Kong writer Ms Ma Chui Law wrote a novel Atypical Girl after SARS to represent the disaster in front of readers’ eyes. Most reviews mentioned that the book reflected the real situation of SARS in Hong Kong, but actually that is not true as there are insufficient and incorrect sections in the book. For the insufficient parts, the writer mainly focused on the situation in one of the hospitals in Hong Kong which is not able to represent the whole situation. For the incorrectness in the novel, the book used an optimistic tone to narrate while the reality was full of sorrow. All of these showed that the book failed to reflect the real situations during the time of SARs in Hong Kong.

“Bias in Advertisements: Sexual Discrimination”

Advertisements nowadays become more creative and interesting. At the same time, the concepts of women become more open than the past. But in these advertisements, we see women being stereotyped more often than men. This research will examine this objectification of women in the advertisements, and ask generals’ point of view, through the questionnaire to supplement the survey data. By pointing out the unfair phenomenon in this highly developed world, I hope this research can evoke the masses’ consciousness, and make people start to be critical when facing the objectified advertisements.
