“Free Will and Sin of Man in Milton’s Paradise Lost

From the Book of Genesis, people learn that Adam and Eve’s sin (eating the forbidden fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge) causes man’s fall. Central to John Milton in the epic poem Paradise Lost is the question of whether man has free will or is subject to divine providence. This paper discusses the significance of free will given to human beings by God. The belief in free will and predestination that Milton demonstrates in Paradise Lost is paradoxical and Milton is certainly aware of the paradox, but, as I will attempt to argue, does not believe that the paradox in any way lessens the importance or power of free will or divine providence. The essay argues that Adam and Eve do not have an actual understanding of making decisions out of their “free will” before they confront Satan’s temptation, therefore commit the original sin.

“Postmodernism in ‘We Found Love’ and ‘Video Game’”

The music video of Pop singer Rihanna, “We Found Love,” and Lana Del Rey, “Video Game,” are two of the best and most popular music video in 2011. The former one received great credits on its artistic expression even though the music itself is relatively plain, while the later one was made by singer herself and receive great reception as well. Two of the music video contain many attributes of postmodernism, which is a concept that has been widely discussed since 1970s and highly influences young people nowadays. The article therefore attempts to explore how the postmodern features and signs are presented in these two videos. Content analysis will be used as the method in the research. Theories of well known postmodernists like Fredric Jameson, Ihab Hassan will be applied as reference and basis to further into the video. Most of the attributes can be observed in both music video, like irony, playfulness, black humor and paranoia. However, “We Found Love” involves distinctiveness like magic realism, techno culture and hyper reality and temporal distortion, while “Video Game” applies intertextuality and pastiche in the video.
