"SOPA: Dark Age for All Internet Users."

Among the countless efforts done for the copyright issue, the Congress of the United Stated have been elaborated an advanced copyright act, SOAP, for over half year. The aim of this research would focus on the impact and reaction on the internet use of students in Fu Jen, and also raise the self-awareness of copyright issue. The act would be a great threat to all internet users, for most, college students. For the time and availability of the knowledge they have, this act would certainly influence gravely and cast a great danger to their daily use of internet. To achieve the aim, a related questionnaire would be administered to 100 college students in Fu Jen University. In conclusion, most respondent hold a neutral aspect to this act, but they do believe they would be greatly influenced in capability of resource, inconvenience of life and the money they would need to pay for what they want in the future.

“Attitudes of English Majors towards Teachers’Code-switching in EFL Class

Recently code-switching has become an important strategy in foreign language teaching . The present paper conducts an investigation in the English department in a private university in Taiwan to find out the positive role of using Chinese in the EFL classrooms and the students’ attitudes towards it. A total of 8 English classes are observed and 70 students in those classes participate in the study and complete a questionnaire by indicating their attitudes towards code-switching. The analysis of class observation reveals most teachers switch code in class in times of need for different purposes. The questionnaire indicates most students have positive attitudes towards code-switching. This study will lead to better instruction in the foreign language classroom with an appropriate use of code-switching.

The Aesthetics of Violence: An Appeal of Human Nature”

Nowadays, the aesthetics of violence in movies have become popular among young generation. While many scholars argue that these films will affect teenagers’ mental development adversely, youngsters merely view this new type of movies an entertainment. Therefore, to understand how students of different ages view this type of movies, their motivation and also the after-effect, I will do a survey on college students and junior high school students in Taiwan. I want to achieve three goals through my research: 1) to find out why people are attracted to the portrayals of violence through anthropologic and psychological reasons, 2) how these violent scenes in films have influenced students now in Taiwan, and 3) whether any positive contribution of films with aesthetics of violence exist.

“A Poet’s Pen: Metaphoric Clues in Emily Dickinson’s ‘My Life had stood -- a Loaded Gun --’”

The poetry of Emily Dickinson, while highly popular nowadays, is often characterized as being obscure and ambivalent. This essay attempts to review “My Life had stood -- a Loaded Gun --,” summarizing important critical viewpoints since its publication and integrating the extended metaphor of the personification of a gun with the imagery of a pen. This paper argues that the different interpretations of the gun as a female, a poet, masculine power, or creative inspiration can be neatly assimilated with an extended metaphor of a poet’s pen by explicating the poem in detail and drawing annotations based on this imagery.
