English Self-Learning Actvities for CCIII-C

One Quick Thing & Our Story
All the of projects described on the Course Introduction page involve self-learning, and can help you improve your four skills and critical thinking in English. But in order to engage you in active discussions and effective presentations of more diverse topics than your research projects and application portfolio, we will do One Quick Thing at the beginning of our Tuesday class, and have Our Story as the semester group project.

One Quick Thing: (More specific topics will be added as we go along, for instance, “One Quick Thing about my strengths and weaknesses,” “One Quick Thing about my language problems,” “One Quick Thing about world news,” etc.)
General Objectives: speak up on diverse and relevant topics actively, clearly, to the point, and with good eye contact. More specific requirements will be added: for instance, respond to the previous speaker before you present your views; using past tense when telling a story, etc.
References: (thanks to Dr. Wenling Su for initiating the idea)

Our Story: everyone likes to tell and listen to stories, but we do it differently and for different purposes. In a group, I’d like you, in a group of 3-4, to tell a story and present it visually for some specific purposes (including to some specific audience).
Your can choose your own topics, but you can also consider entering the Self-Learning Center’s E-Project contest (topics: A.【E-News: Our World 我們的世界】;B.【The Life of a Fan 粉絲文化】)
General Objectives:
  • Share you interests and/or passion effectively, first with your group members and then beyond;
  • Develop your communication and team work skills through group work and storytelling to convey your ideas;
  • Develop your multiple intelligence to visually present your stories (of acting, painting, video-editing, narrating and musical accompaniment);
  • Develop problem-solving and management skills in team work over a period of three months.
  • Grading Criteria:
    1) audience engagement, concreteness and meaningfulness; no cliché!!!
    2) English quality and correctness;
    3) creativity.
    4) group cooperation
