Conversation



For Composition, to achieve the goals above, you need to

Submit THREE compositions (2-3 typed pages, each with two drafts, the second draft may extend to 3-5 pages after you incorporate researched materials). All compositions shall be proofread by one of your classmates before you hand them in, if there are more than two spelling or S-V agreement errors, the grading automatically begins with a C (below 70).  The three compositions shall focus on 
 --Narration & Description (com.1)
 --Comparison & Contrast (com.2)
 --Synthesis (employing quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing techniques com.3)

Produce a Class Magazine completely written and edited by 3/4 people in a group.
 --Everyone in the group shall contribute at least TWO compositions (from com1 and com.2) already corrected by the instructor and revised, no un-corrected writing shall be published in the magazine and no late compositions will be corrected by the instructor.
 --The magazine shall contain 18/24 pages min. and all published texts shall be your own English writing.  Illustrations shall be relevant to the writing. Borrowed texts, ideas, clipping of pictures and translations are allowed only with proper citation, and a correct works cited at the end of the magazine articles.
 --It is designed and recommended that you plan for the magazine right from the beginning of the semester and relate com.1 and com.2 at least to the focus of the magazine.

Keep weekly writing journals (about 3 pages every two weeks, single spaced, A4 size notebook, please feel free to write down anything you would like to share with the teacher, you may also practice applying what you read in writing).  Many exciting things can be happening in journals. 
4. 11/12 of you can choose to join the Cultural Connection project, make friends with tutors in the University of Texas, improve your English, and enhance your cross-cultural understanding.  These CC project participants may choose to forward monthly journals to share with the teacher and the class your cultural exchange experiences. 
For Conversation, to achieve the conversation course objectives, your are expected to prepare for and actively participate in class activities listed as follows,
 
1.  Give oral presentations of the first two compositions.
2. Conduct a News Broadcast live in class for the mid-term and role-play a substantial interview with a VIP in any field for the final.
3.

 

Present a Class Magazine to students in other teachers' class when it is finished. 
4.  Access to our Web Class, leave messages on Issues discussed in class, build up the Vocabulary databank based on the issues and practice the vocabulary in writing and conversations..
