In this
play, Howard did not appear much. Therefore, I extend to Willy's career
including his definition of success and how his point of views of success
influenced his sons. The relationship between Willy and Howard was that
Howard was Willy's boss and Willy had worked for Howard's father when Howard
was young. Willy even named Howard. In this play, Howard's appearance shown
that Willy was fired. Before he was fired, he did not have stable salary
and he had to earn money only by selling products. It was a shock for Willy
to been fired by Howard who he named him. But the truth was cruel. |

From
the act one, we all know that Willy was good in hands and he could produce
many objects. However, he did not choose that as his career because it
was not a successful job. Originally, Willy decided to go out with his
older brother but he changed his mind finally. It was because that he met
a salesman, Dave Singleman, who was eight four years old in Parker House.
Dave could make money by picking up phone and calling the buyers without
ever leaving his room. Therefore, Willy realized that selling was the greatest
career a man could want. Therefore, he had been a salesman for so many
years even if he was not good in this career and he did not like it. He
also tried to persuade and teach his sons to be a successful salesman just
because it was a successful career.. |

Talk
about Willy's point of views about his career, salesman. Wiily's definitions
of success were well-liked, rich and fame. Actually, Willy did not realize
this career much, for example, he came to Charley 's office and borrowed
money from Charley. Willy told Charley that he was fired and he complained
about Howard's ruthless. What Charley said was right: "You named him Howard,
but you can't sell that. The only thing you get in this world is what you
can sell. And the funny thing is that you're a salesman, and you don't
know that." Willy didn't realize the ruthless of this world. There was
the other example. When Biff tried to tell Willy the truth of the meeting
between him and Oliver, Willy always believed what he thought and ignored
what Biff tried to say. Therefore, he didn't believe that Oliver didn't
remember Biff and there was no meeting between them. Willy refused to believe
that Biff was a shipping clerk not a salesman. |

Sometimes
what Charley said was harmful but absolutely right. Willy believed that
well-liked was an very important element of success so he tried to be well-liked.
Charley said that "Why must everybody liked you? Who liked J.Pmorgan? Was
he impressive? In a Turkish bath, he'd look like a butcher. But with his
pockets on he was very well-liked." Charley and Howard were more realistic
and they were more suitable than Willy to be a salesman. Willy was more
humanistic. Willy always thought that if he was well-liked, people would
like and buy things from him and he would become rich and successful. People
would attend his funeral because people like him. In reality, it was not
truth. The real world and the business world were more realistic. |

Willy's
point of views of career and success influenced his sons deeply. Therefore,
Biff and Happy chose salesman as their career. Biff did not like this job
but he did it for his father. Finally, Biff realized what he wanted and
what he didn't want. How about Happy? He still wanted to prove that Willy
was right and he did not die in vain. |
