Peer Critique Sheet: on Synthesis

This sheet is designed to suggest you how to comment on each other's papers and thus learn to monitor your own/other's writing.  When you respond to other’s paper, remember to comment on both strong and weak points of the papers so that the writers can see how readers may receive their writing.

CRITIQUE PROCESS:
1. Read the paper carefully, write down on the sheet how you feel about the writing, where you find impressed, where you find confusing or misleading.
2. Consider the questions suggested on this sheet and write down how successful/satisfactory the writer has been in meeting the requirements listed in each item.
3. Try not no write for the writers, show them where the problem would exist and suggest them possible directions for revision.

SUGGESTION QUESTIONS ON SYNTHESIS:
1.  Idea 

a. What are the main and supporting ideas in the paper?  
 
b. Did the writer group similar ideas of the three passages in one paragraph or did she/he  
    talk all about one person's different points in one paragraph?  
 
c. Can you follow the ideas of the paper easily?  
 
d. Did the writer add his/ her own opinion in the synthesis?  
 
e. Did the writer quote, summarize or paraphrase the passages?  
    Did the writer misinterpret the meaning of the source?
         2. Organization 
a. Can you see a clear outline in the paper? Why or why not?  
    Is there an instruction, body, and conclusion in the paper?  
 
b. Are related ideas grouped together in one paragraph with a controlling idea, a  
    topic sentence?  
 
c. Does the arrangement of paragraphs make sense to you, i. e. do you have to jump  
    your thought from one idea to another or can you follow along the reasoning of these  
    paragraphs?  
 
d. Did you find any beginning of sentences or paragraphs that needs transitions,  
    links, between thoughts? 
         3. Language 
a. Is the tense in the paper correct? 
 
b. Is the subject-verb agreement correct?  
 
c. Are there any sentences that you find impressive or confusing?
         4. Format 
a. Is the format of the paper the same as demonstrated in MLA handbook?  Are the  
    required  items (page number, course title, student number and name, due date,  
    assignment and title of the paper) given?  Is the right margin justification cancelled?  
  
b. Did the writer cite the sources, i. e. did she/he tell you whose ideas they are and where  
    they are from (e.g. page numbers)?  
  
c. Are quotation marks given in direct quotes?  
  
d. Did the writer provide correct works cited at the end of the paper? (Check MLA  
    handbook for correction format of speech, magazine article.)  Are Chinese names given  
   after romanization?
