English Lessons:
Racial Hegemony and Linguistic Hierarchies in Selected Asian
American Lite
Committee: Ketu H. Katrak, Chair; Susan C. Jarratt; John M. Liu.
This project is a
comparative and multidisciplinary study of the intersection of
racialization and linguistic hierarchies as represented
in selected Asian American writings. This study includes a
discussion of Li-Young Lee's Rose, Chang-rae Lee's Native
Speaker, Lois-Ann Yamanaka's Wild Meat and the Bully Burgers,
and Lee A. Tonouchi's Da Word. I argue that the tendency
towards English monolingualism in the history of the United States
must be understood as implicated in racial power and racial
hegemony, and that resistance to and critique of such trends must
also always be conscious of replicating and reproducing structures
of inequality.
