The term tradition can always find new meanings in our life. To tell the truth, for the youngsters like us, breaking the restrictions of tradition and finding our own directions are the major lessons we have to face all the time. The first time I read this script, Fiddler on the Roof, I thought it is a clichéd play. However, I gradually project myself to those Jews who are always confronted with many dilemmas and painful shocks. When deciding the direction for my further studies and thinking about the cultural split that exists in our society, I slowly begin to realize the pain of experiencing the conflict between the old and the new as Tevye, the father, in the play has gone through. Each rehearsal is a confrontation of the clash of innovation and tradition, a new interpretation breaking away from an old script.
As Motel strives for his own happiness, each of us has to fight for his/her own as well. A double major of English and Sociology, I feel honored to have the opportunity to work with everybody. It’s hard to put my passion for the English Department into words; I greatly appreciate all the help I’ve received. We worked hard together for the play, and without you, it wouldn’t have been possible. We are making history, making changes that did not happen in the past. We all bear witness of the most difficult production ever. We are creating history, of the future, not of the past.
