Course Description

Freshman composition and conversation, though graded separately, are taught as one course, building on the idea that language skills cannot really be compartmentalized.  This course is designed to teach you basic writing skills and basic conversational skills.  In conversation, you are expected to acquire common expressions of oral English, to begin to develop discussion skills, and to improve fluency and accuracy.  In composition, you are expected to acquire basic writing skills, MLA documentation, and the ability to write well-organized and interesting short compositions (at least one page, 3 to 4 paragraphs).

By department policy if you fail the course, you are not allowed to take sophomore conversation and composition.  Besides, you have to repeat the complete two semester courses even if you fail only one of the semesters.

Attendance

You are required to attend all classes and (individual) conferences.  For each unexcused absence 2 points will be deducted from your semester grade.  Five unexcused absences earn an automatic failing grade.  Students coming to classes late (or leaving early) twice will be counted as one absence.  For any leave of sickness, show your insurance card to the instructor to avoid grade deduction.

Assignments

There will be 4 papers, with 2 drafts each.  In addition, you are required to write at least 20 journal entries (which will be collected 4 times during the semester).  Please write (or type) all your written assignments on standard 8x11 inch paper, double-spaced.  Be sure to staple the pages.  Put your name and student number (the last two digits only) on the first page of all written work.

Papers are due at the beginning of class on the day they are due.  No late paper will be accepted unless you have the permission of the instructor.  If you cannot come to the class for a legitimate reason, have a friend turn in your paper (and pick up handouts) for you or leave it in my mailbox the next day.  Plagiarism will not be tolerated.  Any plagiarized work will not be accepted.  Always do your work on your own!
