On Television

"[...]Research done on the educational value of, for example, Sesame Street, has repeatedly shown the benefits a younger child encounters from watching good, educational television.

Most recently, researchers at the University of Massachusetts and the University of Kansas went back and re-contacted 600 children in high school whose television watching habits they had tracked in the 1980s. The kids who watched Sesame Street the most as four- and five-year-olds, were doing better in school than those who didn't.

Even after controlling for parent's education, family size and preschool vocabulary level, Sesame Street watchers did better in high school English, math and science. They were also more likely to read books for leisure than those who did not watch the show. Somehow, a single television show, watched over the course of no more than two or three years as a pre-schooler, was still making a difference 12 and 15 years later.[...]"

On Television

"Many people are worried about what television has done to the generation of American children who have grown up watching it.  For one thing, recent studies tend to show that TV stifles creative imagination.  Some teachers feel that television has taken away the child’s ability to form mental pictures in his own mind, resulting in children who cannot understand a simple story without visual illustrations.  Secondly, too much TV too early tends to cause children to withdraw from real-life experiences. [...]"

On Euthanasia

"[...]     The first and most important reason is that the patients have no chance of recovery. They can never lead normal lives and must be kept alive by life-support machines. [...] The second reason is that medical costs are very high. The cost of a hospital room can be as much as five hundred dollars per day and even more.[...]The third reason is that the family suffers. The nurses can only give the terminally ill patient minimum care.[...]"

On Euthanasia

"[...]Legalising ‘voluntary euthanasia’ on the basis of excruciating ‘hard cases’ would result in its being routinely practiced on a large scale.

[...]Even if someone sincerely wants to be euthanasia this may well be due to depression or to a misapprehension of their true prognosis. Palliative specialists report that such requests are often used by patients to assess their worth and value to others. A positive response merely confirms their worst fears and such a decision, once acted upon, is irreversible.

[...]Any form of suicide is devastating for the people left behind who love the person who has decided that his or her life is no longer worth living: it is especially damaging for children."
