Journal on "When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer

When I was a little kid, my father often
told tales to me before going to sleep. As a
results, I had always believed that there were
a beautiful fairy and a white rabbit living on
]the moon. I often liked to stare at the moon
and pointing out the shape of the fairy and
the rabbit to my father with excitement. But
as time passed by, I had gradually grown up
and learned many realities. When I heard that
the Americans had already been to moon and
proved that there were no living creatures on
moon, I had a very complicated feelings. This
is a world which everything needs to be proved
within science technology and evidence. This
is the century of "science". In one hand I
think it's very good that scientists can
explain a lot of mysteries that had being
confused and vague for centuries, but on the
other hand, I hope I can never know the facts
and keep on dreaming and imagining. I mean, to
me, when nature is involving with proofs,
figures, charts and diagrams, the meaning and
beauty of the nature become incomplete in some
way. Nature is formed naturally, but

now I could sense the odor of artificial
adding on to the nature!..maybe

I am really odd...

I don't know if the author felt the same
way like me, but from the first five lines

When I heard the learn'd astronomer,
When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me,
When I was shown the charts and diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them,
When I sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with much applause in the lecture-room,
How soon accountable I became tired and sick,

I think maybe he didn't like to see the way

people put nature into such specific lines or
columns. When thinking of nature, the
impressions and feelings are always to be
unpredictable, full of live and imaginations,

amazing..etc. So the author seemed inadequate
and uncomfortable to see nature be limited in
this way-figures, diagrams, charts, columns.

Maybe the author thinks the best way to enjoy
nature is observing by one's own eye, don't
necessary need so much figures or much
language. He thinks this kind of lecture will
only ruined the beauty of the nature. Because
no one can really state the meaning of the
nature accurately for everyone is different,
and the way one look things will certainly be
different from others. That's why nature is so
interesting mysterious, and also leaves us a
great space for imagining and enjoy. For ages
numerous splendid works were created by the
effect of great power of nature. The
relationships between art and nature are like
the food chains, one attach to another
tightly. Nature can always stimulate people's
mind in some ways. Maybe because artists or
poets are even more sensitive to our
surroundings and nature, so maybe they can not
tolerate nature been restricted by those
ridiculous forms. That's why the author left
the hall and look'd up in perfect silence at
the stars. I like the word "silence" for I
think sometimes silence can explain everything
instead of keep talking meaninglessly. If we
use our heart, we'll hear the sound of nature,
feel the touch of nature. The figures are
useless at that time.
