Barbara Allan ( Ballad )

Barbara Allan is a popular ballad- a narrative song that has been transmitted orally by the folk.
The story begins in the middle when Sir John met Barbara Allan.
The first stanza describes the setting and also the situation.
" Martinmas " time is November, when the weather is chilly,
does it imply the ending won't be a happy one ?
" Green leaves were a fallin " green represents hope as well as vigorous,
however the green leaves were a-fallin here, shows the bad sign.
In the second stanza, Sir John sent his man to find Barbara Allan,
and tell her the bad news that he's dying, their love may be a forbidden one,
and the lovers were seperated.
" O slowly, slowly rase she up, to the place where he was lying ",
it may be a shock to her as she has learned that her lover is dying,
her slow movement shows either her unwillingness to accept the truth or she's afraid to find out the truth
- which will make her heart broken. Why when she drew the curtain by and said
" Young man, i think you are dying ? "
Her voice sounds cold and gets no feeling for him, however in my opinion,
i suppose she wished that he could get better and wouldn't die,
or she's a woman used to conceal her real emotion.
At the same time, i feel that she didn't worry too much about his death,
will it be possible that at that moment,
she has determined her mind that if he died she would accompany him ?
IN stanza 5 " O dinna ye mind, young man " said she, " When ye the cups were filling "
she mentioned that once he tossed everyone but her.
She remembered that he neglected her, and it's the way she shows her love.
Despite of all those cruel words that Barbara Allan said,
the man still asked his friends to be kind to her,
from here we know that the man not only loves her very much but knows her and her love quite well too.
In the 7 stanza, the repetition makes her departure even more slowly and shows that
she's hesitating to leave. In the last stanza , we know clearly that Barbara Allan will die for her lover.
She has a strong character, i suppose that she's the kind of person that who's brave to love and hate,
however is also the one who's good at concealing her love, don't know how to express her love.
From the way she told the man that he way dying , we may think that she's cold and hard-heartedness,
however she died for him, give us the clue about her affection and love toward him.
