    Some Students' Reflections and Suggestions

     
    "  First of all, I think that we must be well prepared.  Resume plays a very important part in an interview
    becuase it lists every thing that is relevent to you.  Besides, I think a deep understanding about the job is
    important too.  We need to know what abilities we have could really help us to be in that position.  For example, May asked me that what do you think you are qualified for this job.  In other words, self recommend is important.  In this aspect, we need to be confident so that we can convince others that I have the ability to do this job. 

         Through myself and other classmates' interview, I find that we really need to be specific while answering the question.  And giving examples and fully express our goal in a certain position could be very useful.  Situational problems(problem solving) is important too when we are applying for a job as a teacher, or a learder.  Besides, while May ask me about what is my plan after this job as a bussiness secretary, I was really shocked.  Because I never think that this kind of question could be asked in an interview.  "

    • Be ready to answer questions.

    •   
      Hesitations and pauses will make the interview feel that we are not 
      prepared; that is saying we are not interested in or good at this job, or 
      we lack professional knowledge in this field.  Of course, language could 
      also be the problem. 
    •  The eye contact. 

    •   
      I noticed that some classmates dared not look at the interviewers' eyes, 
      especially when answering.  I don't think shyness will be highly valued 
      in a job market; on the contrary, I think proper confidence and courtesy 
      will win more good impressions from the interviewers.  Besides, some 
      people have the habit that looking everywhere else but the listener's 
      face while thinking and recalling. 
     
    • Think about our motivation and what we want to learn in this position. 

    •   
      Some interviewers would like to ask this kind of questions, like May.  I 
      think it is important for both the interviewer and the interviewee to 
      know the answer. 
    • The problems we met in past work experience. 

    •   
         For the interviewers for a teaching job, most of them were asked this 
      question, but not all of them had thoroughly thought about the problem 
      and the solution.  It is a way to learn by re-examine the past experience. 
    • Make good use of your body language and gestures. 

    •   
      For some creativity-needed jobs, one should try to show off himself, 
      instead of sitting there quietly.  So, it is important to make good use 
      of body language and gestures." Jack Peng



    "  So, after the interview, I found there are something that I can do to improve my role in a job interview. 

    1) Collect more information related to the job I am applying for.  It is very important to let the interviewer know that I have basic understandings to the job that I am applying for, not only to show respect to the interviewer but also to prove my background knowledge in this field.  
      
    2) Prepare questions for the job I am applying for, of which the interviewer might bring up in the interview."

    " Before applying for a certain graduate school, one has to know a degree of what the program is about pretty
    thoroughly, otherwise as in this case the interviewee did not know enough about the department and answered
    in a rather vague way.  It is important to do some homework before one goes to an interview.

         As a whole, I believe being aggressive in an appropriate degree is a lot of help.  Also taking an initiative could
    be a lot of help too."

    "  In conclusion, I think that the most important point I learned in this practice is that BE PREPARED.  
    Because when some of us students discussed after the interview, we all think that some questions were really hard to respond right away.  But if we have already thought about those questions, it would be much easier.  If we think too long, the interviewer may think that we are not prepared for this job yet.  But if we answer too quickly without deep thinking, the answer could be wrong...So we must have a lot of preparation before we go interview.  
      
    In addition, there is another problem we found out in our discussion.  During the interview, we may be lead by the interviewer and didn't say what we were prepared to say.  Then I think that we should not only answer the interviewer's questions, but adding our own opinions, too."

    • "First, the interviewers usually just had a glimpse at the resume roughly.  
    They didn't bother to look through the details, or to asked the specific questions.  And sometimes the questions they asked were not quite right to the point, or were not in the field that the interviewees have prepared. ... 
    •  X  started first and made a clear and long statement right before she asked more details.  I think it's a smart idea, because the interviewer may get a clear picture of who I am and what kind of job I really want, and ask you further questions.
    Maybe that's called someone who has the advantages of striking first.  If we stay passive, and always wait for the interviewer throwing the balls to us, we might be missing some of them.  It takes skills to lead the interviews to ask
    questions that we expect them to ask. 
     
  • Moreover, sometimes they would want us to make a comment about the situation. 
  • If we apply for the Dictionary editor, we have to be aware of what needs to be improved in recent dictionaries.  We are required not only to criticize, but also to contribute some constructive suggestions.. .  . 
     
    • Third, they would ask about the interests in our leisure time.  I think it would be better, if we let them know we have a broad interests, and some of them are relevant to the job I apply for. . . . 

    •   
    • Most of all, I think most interviewers want to know that if we get the job, what kind of problems we think ourselves might encounter in the future.   
    It's important for them to know if we can find out and face the problems, and figure out the solutions to the problems.  So we have to make them trust us that we would handle the problems calmly and patiently."  (Mulder Chang)
