While seeing the pictures of Pre-Raphaelite women, the first impression which catches my attention is their plump shapes differing from those of Chinese women. Actually, everyone has his own appreciation of the beautiful. In my opinion, what P-R women represent is their strength and power by means of their high silhouettes. Even though they wear splendid and luxurious clothes with some beautiful decorations, it is hard for me to put their "shapes" and "fine clothes" together. I wonder what they will represent if they wear some kinds of battle dress with arrow and shield as amazon who seem to have the same plump shapes as them. By contrast, what Chinese women represent in the painting is totally different from that of P-R women. Along with the softness of silken clothes dressed on their slender bodies(shapes), people are easier to indulge in their tenderness which arises people's pity on them. In my opinion, they seem to be possessed within the frame which refers to a kind of barrier or bondage to them.
Additionally, I want to talk a little bit about Rossetti's Beata Beatrix and Fanny's W. and D. Downey. When I look at these two paintings, I remind of a famous film called "Nell". The leading actress, Nell, was performed by Judy Foster. Coincidentally, I find that these three women have the same gesture--look at the sky with their eyes being closed. As it is, when Nell closes her eyes and looks at the sky, she always thinks about her childhood acompanying with her twin sister with a smile from her appearance. Unlike Beatrix and W. and D. Wowney, what Nell represents is pleasure and happiness. From the film, I seem not to find out any grief or anxiety from her. However, I seldom have the same feeling when looking at Beatrix and W. and D. Downey. I am of the opinion that both of them are worried about something or waiting for something. But, what does "something" refer to? What do they want?? Don't they feel comfortable to wear that kind of clothes? Do they want to leave the frame? If they want to leave the frame, why don't they just use their stength and power to set themselves free?? Do they also have a curse as The Lady as Shalott and can not get rid of the frame????
