  5. Topic: Does Social Context Affect Second-Language Acquisition? new
In recent years, substantial progress has been made in compiling empirical evidence on the relationship between social context and second-language use and acquisition, and in building a sociolinguistic model of second language acquisition. Studies show that learners’ L2 input and processing of L2 input in social settings are socially mediated; that social and linguistic context affect linguistic use, choice & development; and that learners intentionally assert social identities through their L2 in communicating in social context. A sociolinguistic model of cognition in SLA (Preston 2000, 2002; Fasold & Preston, in press) provides a central framework to integrate research on the interaction of social factors and cognitive processes in producing the evolving, variable linguistic system of interlanguage.
Speaker: Prof. Elaine Tarone, Director of CARLA, University of Minnesota
    Time: 14:00– 16:00, Monday, April 16, 2007
    Place: 靜宜大學蓋夏圖書館十樓會議廳
  6. Topic: The Impact of Alphabetic Print Literacy Level on Oral Second-Language Acquisition new
SLA research has been carried out almost exclusively with highly literate L2 learners, usually students in academic settings. Almost no research has examined the oral SLA of empirically-documented low-literate or illiterate learners, even though this is the largest group of L2 learners worldwide. We do not know whether, or the degree to which, the findings of SLA research apply to this population. This presentation reports the first results of an SLA study documenting the impact of literacy level on oral SLA. This study showed that alphabetic print literacy level of adolescent learners significantly affected their oral second-language processing and use: their recall of oral recasts of grammatical errors; their accuracy in de-contextualized oral elicited imitation tasks; and the grammatical forms they used in oral narratives. The presenter concludes with a call for more SLA research with low literate and illiterate adult learners.
