Bernice Bobs Her Hair
EV/823/025B01 |
It's the hot summer of 1919. Visiting her cousin Marjorie (Veronica
Cartwright), sweet-but-dull Bernice (Shelly Duvall) is transformed
into a smooth-talking man-trap by her vampish kin. However, the
"make-over" works too well, Bernice becomes the belle of the ball,
captivating every boy's interest…even Marjorie's boyfriend Warren
(Bud Cort). The now worldly Bernice has the last laugh…a clever and
ironic twist. One of the best screen translations of F. Scott
Fitzgerald's literary work, Bernice also includes the delightful
supporting role performances of Dennis Christopher ("Breaking Away")
and Polly Holliday ("Alice"). -- Amazon |
Blue Hotel, The (Crane)
EV/823/011B01 V0031267 |
Based on the short
story by Stephen Crane, this film is set in Nebraska in the
1880s...bleak, lonely, and far from what you'd expect the Wild West
to be. But for a naive Swedish immigrant, the frontier parlor of The
Blue Hotel represents the quintessential western fantasy. Jan Kadar
directs. David Warner and James Keach star.
Based on Stephen Crane's 1899 short story
about a Swedish immigrant who unintentionally provokes a senseless
tragedy in a frontier Nebraska hotel. The question of responsibility
raises the issue of prejudice. Hosted by Henry Fonda. |

Fitzgerald & The Last of The Belles (George Schaefer)
(VCI Home Video:
1974.) MV 791.43 S293 VRe |
Interesting, uneven attempt to dramatize
a portion of Fitzgerald's life and his short story, "The Last of the Belles."
The action is intercut between two separate dramas, with the short story,
about a small-town flirt who keeps a steady flow of WWI Army officers buzzing
around her, coming off best. (from Mr.

Good bye Mr. Chips

Robert Donat won an Oscar for his portrayal of the humble British
don in the 1939 film Goodbye, Mr. Chips--and Peter O'Toole
was nominated for his version of the role in this lackluster musical
(he, along with Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight of Midnight Cowboy,
lost to John Wayne in True Grit). O'Toole is affecting as the
shy English schoolteacher at a private boys' school who is brought
out of his shell by the love of a good woman, then goes on to become
a teaching legend after her tragic death. But the idea of turning
this touching tale into a musical (with totally forgettable songs by
John Williams and Leslie Bricusse) was almost as wrong-headed as
having O'Toole do his own singing--or as casting singer Petula Clark
as his wife. -- Amazon |

Jilting
Of Granny Weatherall (Porter)
EV/823/036B01 |
Granny
Weatherall (Geraldine Fitzgerald) is a spunky old lady of eighty who bosses her
doctor and her children. She seems so strong and in control. Yet she has never
had the upper had in her destiny. One morning, a flood of long-forgotten memories
bring her to the realization that of her accomplishments, she cannot console herself
for the shame-filled day she was left standing at the altar. Still, her indomitable
will to live and act independently infuses the last day of her life. Adapted from
the short story by acclaimed writer Katherine Anne Porter ("Ship of Fools"), The
Jilting of Granny Wheatherall reminds us of the plight of many women who wait
for life to claim them, rather than seek life out for themselves. |

This drama is based
on a John Updike story and is narrated by the author. It is the tale
of an angst-filled hero attending music school. The precise
mathematics inherent in the musical compositions he studies is used
as a metaphor for the unattainable perfection humans strive for.

Angelican Huston stars in William Faulkner's classic tale of love
and madness set in the deep South. Miss Emily Grierson was the
fading aristocrat of a small Southern town. When she was young, her
tyrannical father drove away all her suitors. Finally free after his
death, Miss Emily quickly succumbed to the advances of a Yankee day
laborer. Only years later does the town realize the chilling
consequences of this ill-fated romance. A Rose for Emily is
the suspenseful tale of a Southern belle driven mad by isolation and

Prize-winning author William Faulkner, it is at once a twentieth
century gothic romance, a psychological study of isolation, and a
look at the decay of the old South. |
