"Image and Popular

A CENTURY
OF WOMEN--WORK AND FAMILY (BARBARA KOPPLE)

EVR/709/020M01 V0015338 |
Throughout the 20th
century, women have met the challenges and struggles of balancing
work and family. Narrated by Jane Fonda, A Century of Women: Work &
Family weaves fictional and factual stories to illustrate the
history of women in the workforce, as well as their roles as wives
and mothers. Performances and testimonies from a stellar group of
women including Meryl Streep, Gloria Steinem, Twyla Tharp, and Maya
Angelou facilitate the film's innovative method of storytelling.
Archival film, photographs, and interviews retrace historical events
-- from the founding of the PTA to early unions -- that changed our
social landscape. Diaries, letters, and personal memories honor
women of the past and make it clear that the balancing of labor and
family was a matter of life and death. --

Travelling from Byzantine Ravenna to the Celtic Hebrides, from the Norway
of the Vikings to Charlemagne's chapel at Aachen, Lord Clark illuminates the Dark
Ages, the six centuries following the collapse of Roman Empire. The sudden
reawakening of twelfth-century European civilization is traced from the first
manifestations at the Abbey of Cluny to its high point, the building of the cathedral
at Chartress. |

Lord Clark journeys from a
castle in the Loire, through the hills of Tuscany and Umbria, to the cathedral
baptistry at Pisa as he explores the aspirations and achievements of the later
Middle Ages in France and Italy. Lord Clark visits Florence, where European
thought enjoyed new impetus by rediscovery of its classical past. He also journeys
to the palaces at Urbino and Mantua, centers of Rennaissance civilization. |

Papal Rome in the sixteenth century, where Christianity and
antiquity begin to converge, provides the focus for this look at Michelangelo,
Raphael, and da Vinci. The courtyards of the Vatican, the rooms decorated for
the Pope by Raphael, and the Sistine Chapel are visited. The Reformation
is explored, Lord Clark tours the Germany of Albrecht Durer and Martin Luther,
the world of Erasmus, the France of Montaigne, and visits Shakespeare's Elizabethan
England. |

Visit the Rome of the Counter-Reformation-the
Rome of Michelangelo and Bernini. The Catholic Church in its fight against the
Protestant north developed a new splendor symbolized by the glory of St. Peter's.
The telescope and microscope revealed new worlds in space and in a drop of
water. The realism found in Dutch painting took the observation of human character
to a new stage of development. |

The harmonious flow and complex symmetry of eighteenth-century music-the compositions
of Bach, Handel, Hadyn, and Mozart-are reflected in the best rococo architecture
of that period, as seen in the churches and palaces of Bavaria. The polite
chat in the elegant salons of eighteenth-century Paris became the precursor of
revolutionary politics. Lord Clark's theme takes him from great European palaces
like Blenheim and Versailles to Jefferson's Monticello. |
Civilisation: The

VE/709/014MO2 |
The belief in the
divinity of nature usurped Christianity's position as the chief
creative force in Western civilization, ushering in the Romantic
movement. Examining this force, Lord Clark takes us to Tintern Abbey,
the Swiss Alps, and the landscapes of Turner and Constable. The French Revolution
led to the dictatorship of Napoleon and the dreary bureaucracies of the nineteenth
century. The disillusionment of the Romantic artists is traced through the music
of Beethoven, the poetry of Byron, the paintings of Delacroix, and the sculpture
of Rodin. |

VE/709/014MO2 |
Lord Clark's thoughts on the materialism and humanitarianism
of the past 100 years take him from the English industrial landscape of the nineteenth
century to the towering skyscrapers of New York City.

This program presents a fascinating chapter in the history of the English
language illustrated by the 10th century Norse village excavated in present-day
York. A careful, scholarly reconstruction of the site demonstrates life in England
around the time of the Doomsday Book-roughly equidistant between Beowulf and The
Canterburry Tales. The program also explains the Norse element in the English
language. |

The greatest distance between people is culture, not space. Join
acclaimed author Jamake Highwater as he explores differences
in how American Indians and people of a western or European heritage experience
themselves and their environments. Illustrated through contrasting views of art,
time, architecture, medicine, and dance, Primal Mind identifies important distinctions
between a mind rooted in respect for nature. Discover how contemporary artists
fused the primal and western ways of thinking to create breakthroughs in modern
art. Examine how Martha Graham, Jackson Pollock, Pablo Picasso, and Henry Moore
were influenced by Southwestern tribal dance, Navaho sand painting, African wood
carvings and masks, and pre-Columbian stone carvings.
This is an excellent 50 minute video. Students
said it was their favorite in a video-heavy course. It introduces
some of the variations in the cultures of Native Americans
and compares and contrasts those cultures with the dominant Western culture.
It also shows how dominant cultures "steal" from native cultures (Martha Graham,
Frieda Kahlo, Pablo Picasso). Great work done by a Native American producer. No
subtitles. (Dr. Marguerite Connor) |

Stonehenge
EV829/006M11

Archaelogists can tell us when and how this great monument was built, but
not what it was supposed to be, or do: an Arthurian RoundTable? A megalithic computer?
Its literary interest lies in its roots, which it shares with many of the strands
in the Arhurian romances, the tales of Chaucer, the Celtic strains in Shakespeare.
Each June, some 60,000 people gather at Stonehange to celebrate the summer solstice:
geologists, witches, sun worshippers, and passersby - the same intellectual mix
that provided the audience for English literature at its dawning.

The Tempest

DVD eng/822.3/T247/ |
In
Julie Taymor's version of 'The Tempest,' the main character is now a
woman named Prospera. Going back to the 16th or 17th century, women
practicing the magical arts of alchemy were often convicted of
witchcraft. In Taymor's version, Prospera is usurped by her brother
and sent off with her four-year daughter on a ship. She ends up on
an island; it's a tabula rasa: no society, so the mother figure
becomes a father figure to Miranda. This leads to the power struggle
and balance between Caliban and Prospera; a struggle not about
brawn, but about intellect. |
