Celebrating the Green (The History of St. Patrick's Day)

無字幕,英文發音 (50 min.)

200/N469/w052189v DVDe

St. Patrick is believed to have driven the snakes from Ireland. Once a pagan himself, St. Patrick is one of Christianity's most widely known figures.

The modern secular holiday is based on the original Christian saint's feast day also thought to be the date of the saint's death. In 1737, Irish immigrants to the United States began observing the holiday publicly in Boston and held the first St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York City in 1766.

Today, the tradition continues with people from all walks and heritages by wearing green, eating Irish food, and attending parades. St. Patrick's Day is bursting with folklore; from the shamrock to the leprechaun and to pinching those that are not wearing green.

One the desolate coast of Denmark live Martina and Philippa, the beautiful daughters of a devout clergyman who preaches salvation through self-denial. Both girls sacrifice youthful passion to faith and duty, and even many years after their father’s death, they keep his austere teaching alive among the townspeople. But with the arrival of Babette, a mysterious refugee from France’s civil war, life for the sisters and their tiny hamlet begins to change. Soon, Babette has convinced them to try something truly outrageous—a gourmet French meal! Her feast, of course, scandalizes the local elders. Just who is this strangely talented Babette, who has terrified this pious town with the prospect of losing their souls for enjoying too much earthly pleasure?

Copenhagen is about Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg, two of the great scientific minds of the 20th Century, trying to make sense of a meeting they had in September 1941, while World War II raged around them. (source: http://www.pbs.org/hollywoodpresents/copenhagen/about/index.html)

Michael Frayns Tony Award-winning drama COPENHAGEN stars Stephen Rea (The Crying Game, Michael Collins, End of the Affair), Daniel Craing (Road of Persition, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) and Francesca Annis (Reckless, Wives and Daughters). Recent Tony nominee Howard Davies (Private Lives) adapts and directs Frayens original play.

Inspired by actual events that have intrigued and baffled historians for more than 50years, COPENHAGEN revolves around a 1941 meeting between two brilliant physicist, Niels Bohr of Denmark (Stephen Rea) and Germanys Werner Heisenberg (Daniel Craig), longtime friends whose work together opened the way to the atomic bomb, but who are now on opposite sides of World War II. Heisenberg makes a covert trip at great risk to see Bohr and his wife Margrethe (Francesca Annis) in Copenhagen, but the meeting ends in disaster. Why did Heisenberg go to Denmark, and what did the two men stay to each other? What happened during this pivotal meeting that was a defining moment of the modern nuclear age?

This is taped from what looks like a lecture on campus. Poor quality, visually boring, content-wise it's dulling. I don't recommend this at all, although the title is certainly promising! (Dr. Marguerite Connor)

"Hearty laughs-- the cast seems to have had a ball."--Variety

Many of the film's actors are alumni from previous Mel Brooks features: Dom DeLuise and Madeline Kabn have appeared in three films, Harvey Korman, Cloris Leachman and Ron Carey have appeared in two,; and Sid Caesar has appeared in one earlier film.

Mel brooks' uproarious version of history proves nothing is sacred as he takes us on a laugh-filled look at what really happened throughout time. His delirious romp features everything from a wild-send-up of "2001" to the real stories behind the Roman Empire (Brooks reigns as King Louis XCI) and the Spanish Inquisition (a splashy song-and-dance number with monks and swimming nuns.) It's Mel and company at their hilarious best.

Forty women escaped extermination at Poland's most notorious death camp by playing in a bizarre orchestra that entertained the Nazis and calmed prisoners on their way to the crematoriums. Eleven surviving players are interviewed in this compelling 102-minute  documentary that inspired the Emmy-winning television drama Playing for Time, starring Vanessa Redgrave. There is French vocalist,  Violette, who describes the privileges of being an orchestra member: larger portions of bread, daily showers versus monthly-- and the possibility of avoiding execution. Or there's Greek Yvette, relocated to the United States, who saw her own parents marched to the ovens as she played piano. Some of the women choose to focus on the music, others on their personal accounts of atrocity. Director  Michel Daeron takes care to show each in their current homes and environments, supplementing with old photos. Most devastating are  the film's final 22 minutes in which former orchestra members Helena and Zocha walk the fields of the camp, passing the still-standing buildings and finding the ruins of their old barracks. It is there, in the place where it happened, that the women's tales of  powerlessness--of playing music while children were taken from their mothers' arms and sent to certain death--are most resonant.  -- Amazon

The Nazi officer's wife discovered the Holocaust from forbidden BBC broadcasts and so learned the fate of family and friends. In 1938, Edith Hahn was a Viennese law student, a “Christmas-tree Jew” with a gentile boyfriend. In 1942, she was living under an assumed name in Munich, married to Werner Vetter, a Nazi party member who was later drafted into the Wehrmacht. Based on Hahn’s acclaimed memoir, THE NAZI OFFICER’S WIFE is the riveting account of how she survived the Holocaust by posing as an Aryan hausfrau. Despite the risks, she kept painstaking records, including real and falsified documents, and photos of labor camps. These moving artifacts, along with testimony from Hahn and her daughter, bring this tale of survival, resilience, and redemption to life.
