VIII.     對…的期望 (Be supposed to)  

A.  Be supposed to的用法有四種:

1)    對規範或慣例的期待:

People are supposed to kiss each other in the cheeks when they greet in France. It shows your manner.

2)    所能預料的事:

The earth is supposed to be dried-up. It hasn’t been raining for a month.

3)    傳聞的:

The Caribbean is supposed to be wonderful for a weekend getaway. Everyone says it’s a paradise on earth.

4)    計劃或規劃:

The construction workers are supposed to show up at 9 a.m.

B.   Be supposed to 所搭配的時態:

1)    簡單現在式:

   Wanda is supposed to finish her grocery shopping by now.(表示對現在的期待)

   Carrie is supposed to hand in her portrait next Wednesday. (表示對未來的期待)

2)    簡單過去式: (表示期待過去該發生卻未發生的事)

Larry was supposed to be here on Monday.

They were supposed to send the package at 8 a.m.

C.  問答:

Were we supposed to bring the dessert? Yes, you were./No, you weren’t.

Is Darcy supposed to play in the recital tonight? Yes, he is./No, he isn’t.
